One of the ferries on the bicycle route 'De 8 van Grou' around the Frisian Grou uses a wireless calling system from Firecom in Lekkerkerk. Those who want to be transferred press a button. The ferry skipper on duty receives the call directly on a robust pager. He can't see the other side, but knows someone wants to be transferred there. “After our first informal contact, owner Joost Eerland from Lekkerkerk drove to us for a practical test. The paging system only has to bridge a short distance, but we certainly wanted it to work for weeks. And it does! ” said ferry skipper Kor Hylkema

'De 8 van Grou' is a cycling and walking route over various distances through the beautiful water-rich center of Friesland. The entire route forms an 8 on the map, hence the name. Those who take these use no less than 10 ferries, manned by volunteers. The cycle route is therefore also called 'the ferry route'. Sailing with a ferry gives an extra dimension to your cycling trip.
