De Jong Packaging in De Lier (South Holland) is a successful, customer-oriented company with approximately 400 employees. Founded by entrepreneur Henk de Jong in 1995, De Jong Packaging has grown into the only independent producer of corrugated packaging in the Netherlands in over twenty years. The strength of De Jong Packaging is that they can deliver quickly from a large stock. More information can be found at www.dejongverpacking.com.

Production manager Ben van der Dussen is responsible for safety at De Jong Packaging. “Of our 400 employees, there are about 70 emergency response team members. They work spread over 3 buildings. In 2 of these they respond to notifications arriving on their Galaxy alarm receiver (pager) ”. In order to be able to issue a manual report, wireless in-house emergency response buttons have been installed at 40 fixed locations in the company, which must be pressed in the event of an emergency or danger. The reports are received by the emergency response team without the intervention of a central or dispatcher. On their screen they can see which detector has been pressed. “The location representation of the emergency buttons usually works well due to the naming of your choice and the fixed locations of the buttons,” says Van der Dussen. As a result, the emergency response team leaders are usually on site within a few minutes. Reports from the fire alarm center (BMC) also arrive at the alarm receivers of the emergency response team members.

Via the specially developed Firecom ESPA 4.4.4. link, the messages from the BMC are sent to the pagers via the Firecom emergency response system. Van der Dussen: “Not all reports from the BMC and sprinkler system are equally clear, which is one of the reasons why the supplier of the BMC and sprinkler system is trained on how to work with the system and how to clarify the meaning of reports and associated actions”.

After a report, the emergency response team can contact each other via (for the time being) 32 walkie-talkies, 18 of which are UHF. For a larger and better range between the machines, these portos use a Motorola network amplifier. “We don't use the walkie-talkie network very often, but it worked well in a delivery test!”.
