It couldn't be much easier than communicating through push-to-talk. By simply pressing the button you take over the proverbial baton and you can leave a message that will be sent immediately to a group or just a few. But how does push-to-talk actually work, where does it come from and what benefits does it offer? We are happy to explain that, so read on!

What exactly is push-to-talk?

During a telephone conversation it is possible to interrupt each other. This is made possible by the fact that the connection works both ways. A walkie-talkie or mobile phone that works on a radio frequency does not offer this possibility. Only one device can transmit, the frequency of which is currently occupied. However, other walkie-talkies and two-way radios tuned to the specific frequency can receive the message. The button that is pressed to send a message actually causes the channel to be only for you at the time, after which you can speak to send a message. In fact, you cannot send a message without pressing the button. Hence the push-to-talk principle.

What are the advantages of push-to-talk in use?

Logically, it offers advantages to be able to send and receive back and forth without any action being required. It is not without reason that we have been calling each other for decades. Yet there are also all kinds of benefits associated with communication through the push-to-talk principle. Especially when it comes to a business environment, managing staff or, for example, securing objects. The advantages of push-to-talk are listed below.

  • No noise on the line

The push-to-talk principle guarantees that your messages are always loud and clear because only one transmitter can be active on the frequency at a time. So voices and conversations do not mix and it is not possible to interrupt each other. This makes it easier to manage a large number of people.

  • Instant connection with a group or person

The connection opens immediately as soon as you press the button. So you do not have to wait for the person or people you would like to reach the answer. This way you can proceed faster and the communication is streamlined.

  • Switch quickly

With the push-to-talk function it becomes even easier to switch between each other. After some practice or familiarity with ether discipline, you and your colleagues can more easily let each other speak. The habit of keeping the frequency free for messages with priority comes quickly, so that mutual communication only revolves around what really matters.

The two different types

Where the push-to-talk principle was partly created out of necessity because on the other hand the technology does not function, the principle is now also possible on 3G and 4G connections. The disadvantages of using a walkie-talkie are eliminated, since national coverage is possible with, for example, a 4G connection. This is called Push-to-talk over Cellular, or POC. This technology can be used on special devices, but also on smartphones! The next step in lightning-fast communication.
